Katie Holmes showed off a new look at an awards ceremony honoring her husband, Tom Cruise, Thursday evening in Germany.

Holmes premiered her new longer-bob haircut on the red carpet as she and her husband made their way into a Duesseldorf ceremony, honoring Cruise for taking risks in his films.

While many suggested Katie’s last haircut took inspiration from her pal, Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham, her new ‘do, complete with heavy bangs and flatter edges, was entirely her own.

As for Cruise, he accepted his award from a prize committee who honored him for choosing courageous film roles, including his upcoming film “Valkyrie,” Reuters reported.

But alas, she only went and married another vertically challenged man, singer Keith Urban.

And at this week’s London premiere of The Golden Compass, the couples’ height difference was blatantly obvious.

Keith is only 5ft 7 and a half – about the same height as Tom Cruise.

“Standing next to hubby Keith Urban, 5ft 10 inch Nicole STILL towered over him - even wearing inch high kitten heels,” says Sun Fashion Editor Erica Davies.

“They were hardly Posh Spice heel height proportions - around 5-inches - yet Nicole still looked like a giant.

“She also opted for a pale creamy colour which matched her dress.

“But as EVERY stylist knows, nude coloured shoes always make legs appear longer.

In this ensemble, Nic looked pale and not very interesting.

“But one thing’s for sure, she sure looked tall.”

Rihanna led the pack of trendsetters this year, but she may have Miley Cyrus, Rachel Bilson, Emma Watson or the “Gossip Girls” nipping at her heels in 2008.

That’s the prediction of Gina Kelly, the fashion director of Seventeen who helped pick the “Style Stars” for the magazine’s December/January issue.

In some ways, it’s the younger generation of celebrities who enjoy the most influence over the fashion world because they’re the ones willing to take the risks that inspire new trends, says Kelly.

“All the people we picked are true to their own style,” she adds.

Take Rihanna: She rocked the 1980s look with bold prints, bright colours and big door-knocker earrings.

“I love her because she’s not like anyone else out there,” Kelly says. “It starts with her haircut. When she started out, it was long and pretty, but when she got the asymmetrical bob, she just started to break out - and then she got a cool new wardrobe to match her cool new hair.”

Other winners in Seventeen’s first Style Star awards were Vanessa Hudgens, Jessica Alba, Jordin Sparks, Fergie, Lauren Conrad, Ashley Simpson and Lil Mama.

“Lil Mama - she stands out because she’s super individual. There’s a little tomboyishness, but she also can be girlie,” Kelly observes. “She’s also very age appropriate. There’s never too much skin.”

Right now, Cyrus, the real-life “Hannah Montana,” is doing a good job connecting to the teens and tweens who love her, Kelly says, but she’ll have to walk a fine line as she gets older and likely becomes an even bigger star. “I’d love to see her evolve a little but also keep her youthfulness.”

Rihanna At “Good Girl Gone Bad Tour” Germany

The 26-year old actress Natalie Portman not only portrays incredible characters on screen (nevermind the speed bump that was the Star Wars prequels) but also uses her power off-screen to support and promote some incredible campaigns and initiatives. The UK Observer Magazine recently sat down with the star — over a veggie lunch and tap water — to discuss her career and passion for giving back. Here are some highlights:

On not being a vegan and recycling clothing:
“She’s not a vegan, though she has been trying to phase out eggs. ‘But I don’t think I could do it. It’s really hard for traveling, especially if you want to maintain your protein levels.’ She refuses to wear leather, but will wear wool. ‘Although I don’t think I have a lot of wool clothes. And I sort of made a no-buying-anything-new rule. I just have a lot of stuff,’ she says with a tiny pout. ‘And I figured: look, if I need something, if my running shoes have holes in them and I don’t have running shoes any more, then I’ll get new ones. But you know, I have 40 T-shirts, I have 20 pairs of jeans - you get so forced into believing [that you need all this stuff]. Maybe it’s a New York thing.’”

On selecting FINCA as her charity of choice:
“‘Well, yeah, because I wanna do something meaningful. They ask you to do 4,000 charity things a year and all of them are worthy. But I don’t think you can really make an impact unless you do [just] one thing and really devote yourself. And it’s been important to me.’”

On the environment:
‘There’s this book I love called The Future of Life by EO Wilson, about the environment. It’s basically aimed at business people who just think about infinite possibilities, infinite expansion - but the earth is limited! It’s very short term to think we can just accumulate and make as much as we can. If you wanna think longer-term economically, there are better ways.’
