Nicole Kidman’s latest maternity outfit is nothing if not daring.

The Hollywood star stepped out in a bizarre black frock with large sheer panels to promote her film The Golden Compass in Japan yesterday.

The see-through dress momentarily distracted from her emerging bump, which she nursed carefully during the photo call.

Nicole is scheduled to return to the US later this week ahead of the Academy Awards on Sunday night, where she will resent an Oscar along with fellow Hollywood luminaries Helen Mirren, George Clooney and Katherine Heigl.

When she split from shorty shortison Tom Cruise she famously boasted ‘Now I can wear heels!’

But alas, she only went and married another vertically challenged man, singer Keith Urban.

And at this week’s London premiere of The Golden Compass, the couples’ height difference was blatantly obvious.

Keith is only 5ft 7 and a half – about the same height as Tom Cruise.

“Standing next to hubby Keith Urban, 5ft 10 inch Nicole STILL towered over him - even wearing inch high kitten heels,” says Sun Fashion Editor Erica Davies.

“They were hardly Posh Spice heel height proportions - around 5-inches - yet Nicole still looked like a giant.

“She also opted for a pale creamy colour which matched her dress.

“But as EVERY stylist knows, nude coloured shoes always make legs appear longer.

In this ensemble, Nic looked pale and not very interesting.

“But one thing’s for sure, she sure looked tall.”

Nicole on how her nearsightedness helped her deal with the paparazzi:
“I never wore glasses except when I had to read a teleprompter at an awards show or drive, so I didn’t notice much. I could exist in my head. It was kind of my escape from the world and my protection.”

Nicole on how LASIK surgery changed all that:
“I was walking around legally blind. Now I have 20-20 vision. I can’t believe I spent so many years blurry, but I think that coincides with how I was feeling. Now I notice if people are watching me, but I also smile right back if someone waves, which helps.”

Nicole on her first year of marriage:
“They say the first year of marriage is the hardest. Please, God — he’s the most important person in my life, and he says I am for him, and that’s where we’re at. We won’t go more than 12 days apart, ever. The time he went away to rehab was the longest time.”

Nicole on being 40 years old:
“Yipee! I can’t believe I made it. It feels like a long haul to get here. I’m so fine with it. People want you to have some sort of breakdown, but I’m relieved to be 40 years old, and I’ve lived a life.”

Nicole on her kids, Isabella and Conner:
“Yes, they’re being raised as Scientologists. I don’t want to go there.”

On Urban’s rehab stint.

•Vanity Fair. “I’ve learned an enormous amount having a relationship with someone who is in recovery. I’m more than willing to walk it with him. … We were in a very, very, very bad, painful place and have managed to step through it, and I hope that gives some people some hope who may be in the same place. And that’s enough said. Anything else is overindulgent and unnecessary right now.”

•Ladies’ Home Journal. “That’s all so raw still. He’s talked about his recovery, but for me, it’s still just, I don’t know. If I say something, before you know it it’s a headline on some tabloid and it just sounds so trite and it’s not.”

On handling a long-distance relationship.

•VF. “Two weeks is still too long for us (to be apart). We like one week. We start to hurt after seven days.”

•LHJ. “We both fly to each other and are never apart for more than two weeks, and even that’s too long. We’re usually apart for only one week at a time. We’re totally committed to that. … I’ve never wanted to live my life apart from the person I love. So that’s what we do.”

On having kids with Urban.

•VF. “I’m yearning to have one. I think I would be very sad if I wasn’t able to have a baby. Keith knows I want one, and he has been getting there slowly.”

•LHJ. “My husband really wants a couple of years, he said, ‘where I just have you.’ So it’s kind of romantic. He’s like, ‘I just love the two of us.’ It’s really honest. So as a woman I sort of hear that loud and clear and go, ‘OK, I get that.’ So that’s kind of what we decided.”

On her children with ex Tom Cruise: Isabella, 14, and Connor, 12.

•VF. “I called Tom (from Australia) and said, ‘Guess what? Bella wants blue hair.’ I go with my daughter to the hair salon to get it dyed blue, and I look at her and I think, My God, it’s cool!”

•LHJ. “My son just flew to Australia and worked on this new film (Baz Luhrmann’s Australia). He loved it. There are a lot of horses, and he worked with them and the wranglers. He got a paycheck —his first paycheck— from his mother.”

On her personality traits.

•VF. “I get engaged and I get married — that’s my thing,” Kidman says after revealing that she was engaged to a man she declined to identify after her split from Cruise and before she hooked up with Urban. “I wasn’t ready. We weren’t ready.”

•LHJ. “I’ve raised an extended family in all its shapes and forms. It’s very, very hard to do alone, so it’s wonderful to be able to call on grandparents and sisters and the ex-husband and all of the ways in which we now co-exist. And if you can maintain a balance through that, I think that’s really special.”

In this scene filmed in Bowen, Australia on Tuesday, Lady Sarah Ashley (Kidman) leaves her hotel where a man was seen mishandling her luggage.

The cattle drover character (super sweaty Jackman) rushes to the rescue and kindly returns Lady Ashley’s luggage back to her… including her bra! Always a gentleman…

Nicole was joined by country music singer hubby Keith Urban on set, who was very attentive towards his wife as they held hands, sitting in the shade between takes.

Co-star Hugh Jackman also joined Nicole on set to shoots scenes under the leadership of Australia director Baz Luhrmann. The Aussie A-listers were dressed to the nines with Nicole looking prim and proper as an English aristocrat and Hugh looking handsomely rugged as a cattle driver.

Aussie beauty Nicole Kidman is awarded Australia’s top civil honor, the Companion of the Order of Australia (equivalent to an English knighthood) for her work promoting women and children’s health, and cancer research.

“It’s a pat on the back, which as a little girl is something you dream of,” Australia’s golden girl said after receiving her award.

Nicole, 39, was honored during a ceremony at Government House, Yarralumla on Friday in Canberra, Australia. Hubby Keith Urban and proud parents Janelle and Antony were present for the ceremony.

The Oscar-winning actress was supposed to be presented with this award last year but the presentation was delayed until today due to her film commitments and wedding to Keith Urban. Congrats, Nicole!
