March 7th, 2007 Chris Richardson Wants To Cry

For the second week in a row, the most enjoyable American Idol performance of the night from the Top 8 guys was Chris Richardson’s rendition of Keith Urban’s “Tonight I Wanna Cry.” Admittedly, it wasn’t even that good.

In the intro segment, Chris, 22, revealed that he used to be chunky but lost forty pounds. As for his performance, here’s what the judges had to say:

  • Randy Jackson: “You know what I love about you? Every week you come out here and you put the boys on blast. You sang a Keith Urban song. You put your own twist on it with the runs. Dude I like this, you’re switching it up. This kid is in it to win it!
  • Paula Abdul: “You picked a great song too. There’s that intonation in your voice that lends itself to a pop-country [genre]. You just adapted well. You picked a great song.
  • Simon Cowell: “It was good. I’m not jumping out my chair. It’s not the best vocal we’ve heard. It was cutesy. Your voice was a bit nasally to be honest with you. I still don’t think we’ve heard what you’re capable of doing yet. I just thought it was a little bit timid and safe. But you sold it. Anyone else, that might be a problem.”

If I had to give the boot to two, it would definitely be Phil and Sanjaya (lay off the straightening iron, please).

February 28th, 2007 Chris Richardson is the “Geek in the Pink”

The most enjoyable American Idol performance of the night from the Top 10 guys was Chris Richardson’s rendition of Jason Mraz’s “Geek in the Pink.”

Chris dedicated this song to his grandma. Randy said Chris sang it better than the original. Simon said it was the “best performance of the night by a mile.” And Paula said, well, I forget. Watch the performance below and make your own call!
