In her sexy red dress, Britney Spears finally appeared yesterday for a deposition in her child-custody battle with Kevin Federline, her ex-husband’s lawyer said. Spears was deposed for just 14 minutes, attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan told reporters after the 26-year-old singer left. Paparazzi sprinted after Spears, who was wearing a hot pink dress and sunglasses, as she drove away from the Century City office tower in Los Angeles in a white Mercedes-Benz. Spears called in sick for a Dec. 12 court-ordered deposition but was photographed that day driving with a friend. She also didn’t show up for a session Wednesday, Kaplan said. Spears and Federline, 29, have been wrangling over custody of their sons, 2-year-old Sean Preston and 1-year-old Jayden James.

Britney Spears’ lawyers in her custody battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline are quitting. The law firm Trope and Trope asked a court Wednesday to be relieved as Spears’ attorneys. The firm says there’s been a “breakdown” in communication with the pop princess that makes representing her “impossible,” according to the filing, obtained by CelebTV.com.

A message left with a publicist for Spears’ record label was not immediately returned.

Spears and Federline have been wrangling for months over custody of their sons, 2-year-old Sean Preston and 1-year-old Jayden James.

Federline has temporary custody because Spears, who has limited visitation rights, has defied court orders. The two were married in October 2004 and finalized their divorce in July.

On a separate legal front, an attorney for Spears wants the city attorney’s office to prove that the pop star is a permanent California resident and is subject to state laws that require her to have a valid California driver’s license.

Spears faces up to a year of probation if convicted in a misdemeanor case of driving without a valid license, a charge to which she has pleaded not guilty. The case stems from a videotaped fender-bender in a parking lot in August. A hit-and-run charge has been dismissed.

Spears attorney J. Michael Flanagan earlier Wednesday requested that prosecutors be required to demonstrate that Spears, who owns homes in Louisiana and Florida, intends to make Los Angeles her permanent legal home.

“If they can establish that Britney is domiciled here in California, that she permanently intends to stay here, then she does have a requirement to get a license,” Flanagan said in an interview. “Basically, it’s a fix-it ticket.”

Flanagan said Spears had a valid Louisiana license at the time of the incident and got a California license six days after the complaint was filed.

A call seeking comment from the city attorney’s office was not immediately returned. The next court date is Jan. 25.

Britney Spears called in sick to her court-ordered deposition Dec. 12, and according to her friends, we can expect her so-called illness to rear its ugly head again — relapses that will happen to coincide with future court dates.

“Britney feels like this is a perfectly acceptable thing to do,” said a source close to Spears. “She did feel sick, but more than anything, she felt like she didn’t have to do something just because she was told.”

Would Britney really risk losing her kids rather than face questions about her parenting? The answer is complicated. “She would do anything for those babies,” one former employee was quick to point out. “But she really doesn’t believe that she’s going to lose them. She’s not connecting the dots.”

This isn’t the first time that Spears’ cooperation with the courts has been called into question. Kevin Federline’s attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan, complained in court last month that she was routinely ducking court-ordered drug tests, often failing to pick up her telephone or respond promptly when called to the laboratory. After that hearing, the court ordered her to provide a reliable telephone number.

“There was a time that Kevin didn’t even have Britney’s cell number,” said one of Spears’ former employees. “Does it seem like a surprise that the court doesn’t have a good number?” Touché.

Britney Spears put her custody and legal woes behind her on Saturday night as she celebrated her 26th birthday in style.

The pop star, who actually turned 26 on Sunday, partied with old pal Paris Hilton at a mansion in Bel Air, Los Angeles.

Spears chose the venue because of its Scandinavian looks.

The singer’s cousin and former assistant, Ali Sims, and dancer companion Sam Lutfi also partied with the pop star, who last week denied reports she’s pregnant with music producer J.R. Rotem’s baby.

Wearing sexy black lingerie and a black bow-tie under a white fur-lined jacket, a smiling Spears celebrated her birthday at midnight with a chocolate cake.

Britney Spears and her ex-husband Kevin Federline have agreed on a set custody schedule for their two sons over the Christmas period.

The decision was made at a closed custody hearing in Los Angeles yesterday but details of the conclusion have not been released.

A source revealed that the court did not mention any plans to investigate Spears’ drug testing.

The singer and Federline are due back in court on January 23 for the next hearing in their ongoing custody battle over two-year-old Sean Preston and one-year-old Jayden James.

Spears spent two hours at a Mercedes dealership in Van Nuys, California, test driving a silver SUV and a white Mercedes SL 65.
She eventually bought the car, which she drove off the lot, followed by her assistant, who left in the Mercedes Spears has been driving for the past year.
A bystander tells WENN, “Britney was very happy with her purchase but made it clear that she might return for the SUV she test drove.
“That would certainly be a great family car for her - and prove she means business about becoming a great mum.” Spears’ old Mercedes has plenty of bad memories for Spears - she was driving it when she was accused of a hit and run in August (07), and she could face another hit and run charge for driving the motor over a police officer’s foot.
