Bono received repeated standing ovations as he talked about the need to eradicate poverty in the world during his acceptance speech at the NAACP Awards last night. Tyra Banks awards Bono the the Chairman’s Award.

“Today the world looks again to the NAACP,” said Bono. “We need the community that taught world about civil rights to teach it about human rights.”

Mary J. Blige garnered the award for Best Female Artist in the music category an Best Music Video for “Be Without You.”

Grey’s Anatomy star Eric Dane, aka Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan, was accompanied by his wife Rebecca Gayheart.

Grey’s Anatomy star Justin Chambers was accompanied to the NAACP Awards by wife Keisha Chambers . Grey’s Anatomy co-stars Chandra Wilson and Isaiah Washington picked up best supporting actor awards in a drama series.

Former American Idol finalist Jennifer Hudson picked up the best supporting actress award for her role in the musical Dreamgirls. Jennifer said, “There is nothing like being recognized and honored by your own.”

Vanessa Williams picked up best supporting actress in a comedy for Ugly Betty. She said, Ugly Betty “is a story about family, about feeling like an outsider, and as African-Americans in this business know, often we feel like an outsider.”

Ugly Betty picked up the NAACP Award for best television comedy series. America Ferrera, who plays Betty, said while accepting, “We knew theme would connect with the American people, who wanted to see fresh faces they can connect with on television.”
